Jonas world is perfect. Everything is under control. there is no fear or pain. There are no choices every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns twelve he is singeled out to recieve special training from the Giver. The Giver alone hold the memories of the true pain and plesure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.
Chapter 1 Summary:
A plane flies over Jonas community. A speaker tell everyone to abandon their bicycles and to go into the nearest building. Later Jonas' family start a ritual of sharing their feeling after dinner. Jonas confeses that he is frighten about the Ceremony of Tweleves.

Jonas sees the video of the Release of one of the twins. He learns that when you release someone you kill them.

Jonas is forsed to leave the next night. All the planing was ruined all because of that evening. In the evening his father was saying that it was the last time they get to see Gabriel. Jonas asked why and his father answered that when he was gone they thought that Gabriel should spend the night at the Nurturing Center and that it didn't go so well. So they decieded to release him in the morning. He had stolen food, stolen his dad bicycle and he took Gabriel with him. As he reached the other side of the river he look back once then continued pedaling. When morning came stoped and got himself and Gabriel out of the bike. They ate and then Jonas made Gabriel sleep again. They continued to sleep at day and travel by night. He also used a memory of cold to make Gabriel's and his body temperature to drop so that the heat-seeking search planes won't find them. Gabriel would shout "Plane, Plane" before Jonas heard the planes. Over time they became less frequent and one day the planes never came.

The landscape changed little by little. One night Jonas fell from the bike because of an unexpected rock in the road. He protected Gabriel but he twisted his ankle and scraped his knee. They began to ride in daylight and one day Gabriel confused a bird with a plane. They began to see wild life and their food was gone. They ate berries they would fine and some fish Jonas would catch. Weather began to change, it started to rain. Bothe Gabriel and Jonas were weak, hungry, and wet.

Gabriel not once cried on the begining of the journey cried because he was wet and hungry. Jonas also began to cry for the same reasons and also fearing for Gabriel life. Then he saw it started to snow. He was soddenly flooded with joy and memories of his family and friends. He finally reached the top of the hill and using the knowledge he had, he found a sled. He climed onto the sled and saw that the hill was steep but the snow soft and they started to go down. Jonas fought to keep his eyes open as they went downward. Then he saw light out into the distance and for the first time he heard something. He heard music.
